ADHD assessment for children and teenagers in Perth
An ADHD assessment looks at a young person’s attention, activity and impulsivity against the diagnostic criteria for ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined. Samantha Blackburn-Read, an endorsed Educational & Developmental Psychologist, completes it at Psychology House in Mosman Park with parent, child and teen interviews, rating scales and a written report.
Who it suits
Children and teenagers whose parents or teachers are concerned about attention, restlessness or impulsive behaviour.
This assessment is for ADHD questions only. It is not designed to cover other factors in academic learning. If you are also worried about reading, writing or maths, ask about the learning difficulties and dyslexia assessment or the comprehensive assessment, which look at both.
Questions about the ADHD assessment
Do we need a GP referral?
No. Parents can contact Psychology House directly. Referrals from GPs, school psychologists, psychiatrists, paediatricians and other health professionals are also welcome.
Does Medicare cover it?
Psychological and educational assessments are generally not covered by Medicare, even with a GP mental health plan. Some private health insurers cover parts of the process, so check with yours.
What if the concern turns out not to be ADHD?
The report sets out what was found and gives practical recommendations. A diagnosis is made only where the criteria are met.
